Too many open tabs? 7 methods to regain control

Forty open tabs, favicons you can no longer read, a fan spinning up and the nagging feeling of having “something to finish” without knowing what. If that sounds like you, you're not disorganised: you're simply using tabs for three things at once — a to-do list, an external memory and a workspace. No browser is designed for that.

Here are seven methods, from the simplest to the most structuring, to get a usable browser back. They combine: start with one or two, keep the ones that stick.

What your tabs really cost

The most visible cost is technical. Each Chrome tab is a separate process, with its own memory — which is what makes the browser robust (a crashing tab doesn't take the others down) but hungry. Thirty to fifty tabs can represent several gigabytes of RAM, and on a machine that's starting to max out, everything slows down: the browser first, the rest of the system next.

The least visible cost is cognitive, and it's probably heavier. An open tab is an unclosed intention. Thirty tabs are thirty things you promised yourself to read, finish or check. You don't deal with them, but your attention sweeps over them every time you look for the one you need. It's a constant background mental load, permanent and utterly pointless.

1. The two-minute rule

The most effective method is also the dumbest: when you open a tab, decide its fate right away.

• Less than two minutes to handle → do it now, then close.
• More than two minutes → it's not a tab, it's a task. Put it in your to-do list and close.
• To keep for later → it's a bookmark or a capture, not a tab. Save and close.

The principle: an open tab should match something you're doing, now. Everything else belongs to another system. This rule alone removes most of the accumulation, because it tackles the cause rather than the symptom.

2. Group by context, not by topic

Chrome and Firefox both offer tab groups, coloured and collapsible (right-click a tab → “Add tab to new group”). It's useful, provided you choose the grouping criterion well.

The classic mistake is to group by theme: “News”, “Dev”, “Personal”. These groups never close, because a theme has no end. Instead, group by work context: “Client Smith — quote”, “Site redesign”, “Tax return”. A context has a beginning and an end — the day the task is done, the whole group closes.

Two or three active groups are enough. Collapse the ones you're not working on: the tabs stay loaded but disappear visually, which solves a good part of the clutter problem.

3. Save sessions instead of keeping them open

Many tabs stay open for one reason only: the fear of losing the whole set. A research folder, a comparison of twelve products, a project to pick up on Monday.

A saved session solves exactly that. You save the set of tabs under a name, close everything, and reopen the session identically when you need it. The comparison of twelve products no longer consumes anything for three weeks, and it's still there.

Chrome natively lets you bookmark all the tabs in a window (Ctrl+Shift+D): this creates a bookmark folder you can reopen in full. It's crude but free and immediate. Dedicated tab managers go further, naming sessions, dating them and allowing you to restore only part of one.

4. Suspend inactive tabs

Suspending a tab means unloading its content from memory while keeping its thumbnail in the bar. It reloads when you click on it. You keep visibility, you get the memory back.

Chrome has offered a native feature for several versions, the “memory savers”, enabled in chrome://settings/performance. It works, but stays barely configurable: you don't finely choose the delay or the sites to exclude.

A dedicated extension like Nexily Tab lets you set this delay, exclude the sites where suspension would be a nuisance (an email client, a document being edited) and measure the memory actually recovered. On a session of fifty tabs, the gain is often measured in gigabytes.

5. Get tasks out of the browser

If your tabs act as a to-do list, no tab-management technique will fix the problem for good: you'll just move the mess around.

The only remedy is to have a single place where things to do go — a task app, a notebook, a Notion page, whatever. What matters is that it's somewhere other than the tab bar, and that you check it regularly. An open tab isn't a task: it's a task you haven't written down.

The test is simple: if you closed all your tabs now, would you lose any information? If the answer is yes, your capture system is incomplete.

6. Close at the end of the day

Get into the habit, at the end of the day, of closing everything not essential for tomorrow. Two minutes are enough: you save the current session if needed, you capture the links to keep, you close the rest.

The clearest effect isn't technical but psychological. Reopening the browser in the morning to five chosen tabs rather than yesterday's forty changes how the day starts. You set off from an intention, not from yesterday's leftovers.

If you can't manage it all at once, start with Friday evening: once a week is already a considerable improvement.

7. Navigate with the keyboard

Part of the accumulation comes from a reflex: you don't dare close a tab because it would be hard to reopen. A few shortcuts remove this hesitation.

The most important is Ctrl+Shift+T: it reopens closed tabs, one by one, several dozen back. Once you know you can recover everything, closing becomes much easier.

Which method to choose for your profile

No need to apply everything. Depending on what produces your tabs, one or two methods are enough:

• You pile up articles to read → the two-minute rule + a capture tool. The problem is a reading problem, not a tab one.
• You juggle several projects → context groups + saved sessions.
• Your machine is sluggish → suspending inactive tabs, as a priority.
• You keep everything “just in case” → end-of-day closing + the Ctrl+Shift+T shortcut to remove the apprehension.

In every case, the measure of success isn't the number of tabs, but this: when you look for a specific tab, do you find it in under three seconds? If so, your system works, whatever the count.
