Studying with flashcards: why it works and how to do it
You reread your notes three times. Everything seemed clear. On exam day, nothing comes back. This almost universal experience has a name in cognitive psychology: the illusion of knowing. Recognising familiar material has nothing to do with being able to recall it.
The method that fixes this bias has been known for a long time, it's boring, and it works: test yourself instead of rereading. Here's how to put it in place without spending more time than you would studying the usual way.
Why rereading isn't enough
Rereading feels good: the text becomes more and more familiar, and your brain interprets that fluency as mastery. It's a misreading. Fluency measures familiarity, not your ability to retrieve the information without the page in front of you.
Highlighting often makes things worse: notes that are entirely yellow haven't been sorted, and the act of highlighting feels like work without requiring any active recall.
The testing effect, in two sentences
Forcing yourself to retrieve information from memory strengthens it more than rereading it does. The greater the retrieval effort — short of complete failure — the stronger the effect.
That's why a good study session feels uncomfortable: if it's easy, you're not really working. The moment you spend three seconds searching for the answer is exactly the moment that counts.
The intervals that work
We forget very quickly, and regularly enough to use it to our advantage: most of what isn't revisited fades within a few days. The idea behind spaced repetition is to schedule each review just before you would forget.

Four well-spaced reviews beat ten rereads crammed the night before. It's the same total time, spread differently.
What separates a good card from a bad one
A badly written card wastes time without teaching you anything. Four rules are enough:
- One idea per card. If the answer has three parts, make three cards.
- A closed question. “What's in chapter 3?” isn't a question. “Which three conditions make a contract legally binding?” is.
- No accidental clues. If the length of the expected answer is obvious, you can answer the card without thinking.
- In your own words. Copying the sentence from your notes trains you to recognise wording, not to understand.
Bad card: “Pythagoras' theorem” → three paragraphs.
Good card: “In what kind of triangle does Pythagoras' theorem apply?” → one sentence.
The real cost: making the cards
Everyone agrees the method works. What makes people give up is making the cards: turning a forty-page course into two hundred cards means hours of typing, and that step arrives at the worst possible moment, when time is running out.
There are two ways out. The first is to create cards as the term goes on, five to ten after each class: the workload becomes invisible. The plan for the last three weeks
Three weeks before an exam, the order of things matters more than the number of hours.
- Week 1 — sort and build. Identify what's actually on the syllabus, drop the rest, make the cards. No deep revision yet: you're building the tool.
- Week 2 — test yourself. Daily passes through everything. It's the uncomfortable week, the one where you discover what you don't know.
- Week 3 — the gaps only. Review only the cards you failed, plus one mock exam under real conditions.
The classic mistake is swapping weeks 1 and 2: starting by revising what you already know, feeling reassured, and discovering the gaps two days before the exam.
What flashcards don't do
They excel at facts: definitions, dates, formulas, vocabulary, classifications. They're weak at long reasoning, essays, proofs and argumentation.
For those skills, nothing replaces full practice: outlining an essay, working through an entire problem, answering a question under time pressure. Cards then serve to secure the building blocks that reasoning relies on, not to replace practice.

Frequently asked questions
Do flashcards work for every subject?
They're very effective for facts — definitions, dates, formulas, vocabulary — and weak for long reasoning. For an essay or a proof, full practice remains essential.
How many flashcards should I make per class?
Five to fifteen cards per class are enough if they cover what matters. Two hundred cards for one chapter usually signals poor sorting, not serious work.
Anki or Quizlet?
Anki is free, powerful and austere, with a solid spaced-repetition algorithm. Quizlet is more approachable and visual, with paid features. For demanding long-term use, Anki is still the benchmark.
Should I review every day?
A short daily session beats a long weekly one: that's the very principle of spaced repetition. Fifteen minutes a day is enough when the deck is well built.
Is highlighting useless?
It isn't useless for spotting what matters on a first read, but it doesn't make you remember. The benefit comes from what you do next with the highlighted passage: rephrase it, turn it into a question, test yourself on it.
